The Real Number System

The Real Number System is built up step by step from the most basic Counting Numbers ("How many fingers do I have up?"), through Integers, to ratios of Integers (Rational Numbers), to special numbers called Irrational Numbers which are unique and cannot be expressed as a ratio of Integers. In addition we will discuss two special kinds of numbers - Prime Numbers and Absolute Value Numbers.

Natural Numbers are the counting numbers and when zero is included they are also referred to as whole numbers. These are the first numbers we are exposed to as children.

Integers are the Natural Numbers plus negatives. Negative numbers are an important concept critical to understanding subtraction.

Rational Numbers are ratios of integers that when divided give either an even decimal or a repeating decimal.

Irrational Numbers are unique numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of Integers. An example of such a number is the square root of 2.

Real Numbers include all the above types of numbers. The only type of numbers not is a special class on numbers called "Complex Numbers" or "Imaginary Numbers" which will be discussed in the Precaculus section of this website.

Prime Numbers are Natural Numbers that cannot be evenly divided by any number other than 1 and itself. The Number 13 is an example of a Prime Number.

Absolute Value is simply the numerical value of a Real Number without regard to sign. Thus, the Absolute Value of a number is always positive, never negative.
